Vocations: Part One

A couple of years ago, we had a vocation celebration for our CCD program at church.   Complete with crafts, guest speakers, and an explanatory Mass.  Some of the activities centered around learning more about the different kinds of vocations.  The highlight of the day were our guest speakers, which included one of our Diocesan Seminarians and five Sisters representing three religious orders.  They shared with the kids (and parents) their vocation stories and answered questions. It was an incredibly valuable experience.
I made these posters with basic definitions of the different kinds of Vocations, including Holy Orders, Religious Life, Marriage, and Single Life.
The kids really loved these posters of the habits/vestments of religious and priests.  The name of items they are wearing are on cardstock backed with pieces of velcro.

They can be pulled off and stuck on.  I kept a book with the answer key near by, so that the kids could self check their answers.
It was great to pull out these posters as I reviewed the Sacraments during our Fulton Sheen Unit.
Check back for part 2 of our Vocation Review!

***Update*** While I would love to share these posters with you, I made them in the days before my blogging and the graphics are not original (see comments below).  However, I have pulled the text of the Vocation definitions and descriptions into a document that you could use to make your own posters.  You can find it here.

  1. Hi...... are your posters with basic definitions of the different kinds of Vocations, including Holy Orders, Religious Life, Marriage, and Single Life available for us to use. Your posters with removable items are awesome ..... Any help for us to teach the vocations would be greatly appreciated.

    1. Hi! I am glad you like the posters!
I wanted to share the idea of our Vocation Celebration, but not all of the resources are original to me, so I did not share them on my blog.
The posters with the velcro vestment labels were hand drawn and based on the priest and sister dolls from Wee Believers. See http://looktohimandberadiant.blogspot.com/2013/06/vocations-part-two.html.
And the posters that outline the different kinds of vocations were based on enlarged pictures from an activity that was originally in Catechist magazine. They had the files available for download on their website, so originally I was able to link back to them, but now the links are all inactive. I feel that ethically, since it is not mine I can't share it.
Sorry that I am not able to help more. I don't want to completely take down the post that you are looking at because it might inspire another idea for someone, but it is a bummer that I can't link to the actual documents anymore.
Hope that helps! Good luck finding resources!

  2. Could you please let me know any more details about the Cathechist magazine. I am teaching the vocations to our family classes and this would be perfect for teaching purposes. I am willing to call the magazine and hunt the article. I can't find anything else like it. Maybe the year it was published? or the title of the article? I apologize if I am coming off pushy but I just know that this is what I am looking for ............. anymore help could be helpful. If you are willing to share the descriptions and I can fill in the pictures. It would be a big help. I really appreciate it.

    1. The pictures should be from Catechist Magazine, Catechist Keyboard: People-of-Jesus Envelope Book March 2010, p. 46. Some articles are archived online, but this one is not available. If you have any luck in contacting them, I would love to know, because I haven't been able to get any answers/or help in the past with similar requests! :)

I wasn't able to see your contact info from your profile, so if you send me an email at katherine (dot) bogner (at) gmail (dot) com, I will email you the files that I have typed for the posters. You will have to cut and paste what you want and enlarge it, but it will be better than starting over!

  3. Hello,
I was wondering if you would be willing to share the definitions you created for each of the vocation posters, please? They look so well done and understandable! I can look for pictures or even draw pictures to match since the Catechist article isn't available, but I'd greatly appreciate it if you are willing to share your definitions?
    Thank you,
    Sarah

    1. Sarah, thanks for you request and for understanding that I can't share the originals. Now that I blog about this stuff, I make sure that all the stuff I post about is shareable. :) I have updated the post with a link to a document that has the definitions and descriptions that you can copy and paste as a start for your own. Hope that helps!

  4. Hi Katie,
I am loving your blog! I was wondering where your vocations part 2 might be? I am a 1st year religion teacher to 5th and 6th grader. Thank you for making these resources available and for getting me excited about lesson planning! God bless you.

    2. Maura, not problem! Especially on a phone it can be hard to navigate! I'm glad you found what you were looking for.
